The fighting and squabbling that I remember from the tv series - they never did show all of it! - was about the accomodation being substandard, beds not comfy enough and drafty windows etc. They were living in 'pods' so far more luxurious than the bothys I would have expected.

As soon as Poolie said Ben Fogle, I remembered it, although I didn't watch it. I can't bear to watch those kind of shows, I want to scream at the TV set, very bad for my inner peace, haha

I think my priority would be to stockpile things I either couldn't make myself or it would be a long winded pain to do.
Potassium hydroxide and Sodium hydroxide for a start, I wouldn't want to live without soap. My next priority would be spares for things like the Rayburn and water pump - assuming we had sorted out some solar panels before the Sh** hit the fan. Perhaps a spare scythe handle..... things like that. There'll always be scrap metal to be recycled but a stock of coke for the forge would be handy, to be used sparingly.

Absolutely! They are re-usable but not for ever, they go hard after several years. Those that came with the German jars I bought in bulk had much better rings with them, I've used them over and over and so far, not one has gone harder than when they were new.

I just sent for a 10 kilo tub of potassium Hydroxide as I'm using a fair bit of my own liquid soap for laundry lately and buying it in small quantities is not cost effective. It's amazing what you can bulk buy these days but I think the availability of that stuff is down to the demand for it from people making their own bio diesel. Since I ordered it I keep getting ads pop up for other bio diesel related products. 10 kilos will make 52 gallons of liquid soap, that should keep me going for a bit :)

I'm a bit confused between the difference between sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide in your soap, which is it that you use?

I've just been buying Caustic Soda crystals from the hardware shop.

I use sodium hydroxide for hard bar soap and potassium hydroxide to make liquid soap. The liquid soap is made using a hot process, for which I use a crock pot. I've been using my liquid soap for laundry so am getting through a fair bit of it but it's such a great cleaning agent that it comes in handy for all sorts. I wash the car with too, it gets dead baked-on flies off the bumper in no time.
